The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) has been organised since 1967. The first Olympiad was held in Warsaw, Poland. The IPhO offers students the opportunity to compete by demonstrating a broad knowledge of physics, problem-solving and analysis skills, creativity and practical experimental skills.

Latvia has been represented at the International Physics Olympiad since 1996. Latvian team leaders and observers (since 1996) – Austris Cābelis, Mārcis Auziņš, Jānis Harja, Leonīds Buligins, Vjačeslavs Kaščejevs, Juris Ulmanis, Andris Muižnieks, Paulis Paulins, Ģirts Barinovs, Sandris Lācis, Jānis Cīmurs, Inese Dudareva, Dāvis Zavickis, Elīna Pavlovska, Mārtiņš Klevs, Ilva Cinīte.
